Emily Flynn, successful content designer for tech, health tech, femtech. Portrait of a copywriter for a portfolio page.

Hi! I’m Emily (or Em), a writer, speaker, researcher, and creative. Welcome to my site and portfolio.

People often tell me that I’ve crammed a lot of life into my life. I am definitely a bit of a busybody and adventurer, crossing oceans and continents to take on opportunities based on my curiosities and passions. Some adventures that joie de vivre has taken me on: Being an advocacy ambassador working alongside the UNHCR in a refugee settlement in Zambia; studying reproductive health in a busy clinic in Denpasar, Bali; building websites for colleagues and non-profits; throwing artist themed supper clubs as part of an all-female artist collective in San Francisco; working with the UNPO in The Hague and ICG in New York as a UN analyst and legal researcher; thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail; solo bikepacking through Iceland to interview midwives; working on a goat farm on top of a mountain near Santa Cruz; teaching health advocacy classes and developing bespoke course materials for each; writing branding content for a Silicon Valley marketing and design firm; and a whole lot more.

I’ve brought this diversity of experiences to all of my writing. Having sat amongst so many humans, moving through cultures and communities, diving into challenging situations, problem-solving solo and with a team — it’s all helped me better understand how to effectively communicate through text, tech, and speech. I feel that I bring all of my 15+ years of sitting with real people to my UX and content development work. Empathy and trust never fail as powerful ROI.

Though the bulk of my writing and speaking over the years has centered on healthcare, femtech, and infant health, my portfolio showcases my willingness to branch into new and exciting topics. With a touch of mentorship and effort, I feel like I can write about anything at this point. Looking over my portfolio and speaking to former managers, you’ll see this to be true – I’ve written about botox for pelvic floor health and design system updates with the same level of diligence, patience, and creativity. I’ve benefited so much from solid leadership and mentorship and love returning the favor.

I’m a solid instructor and strong leader, utilizing my direct communication style to build confidence and understanding within projects and teams. My current career goal is to continue rising within team leadership to direct the content strategy of 0-1 projects within organizations aligned with my values. I hope you will put your trust in me to do this with grace, thoughtfulness, and success.

When I’m not busy writing for money, I’m working on my creative non-fiction, training for Ironman triathlons, long hikes, hanging with my big bully dog, cheering on my beloved Eagles (Go Birds!), reading, going to art museums, and obsessing over my backyard garden in San Francisco. I’m also working on a book pitch. See, busybody! I told ya so.
